Over a decade ago, we became underwriters of Trade Secrets. The decision was an easy one. The mission at Women’s Support Services continues to be crucial. Our recent involvement in a documentary that focuses on addiction and trauma, has made us increasingly aware of how bullying and abuse impact health outcomes over a person’s lifetime. WSS’s work and commitment to educate and address some of these issues is more important now than ever. Our small, but vibrant community is so fortunate to have an organization filled with dedicated staff, employees and volunteers. 2020 marks the 20th anniversary of Trade Secrets. We look forward to supporting this amazing organization for the next twenty.

I got Lion a little over 7 years ago when I was first getting sober. Since then, he has been an integral part of my life! When I was leaving my abusive boyfriend, I had nowhere to put him, and it eventually became his life or mine. Thanks to WSS, my living situation worked out miraculously and they were able to help me board Lion until I had a stable home. We just celebrated our 7th year together. This little guy has been through a lot, and I’m lucky to have him! My counselor at WSS has always been there for me, no matter what the issue or time between appointments has been. I love having a safe place to go.

WSS is essential to building a culture of non-violence and peace. I especially support their work in schools, providing preventative education on respectful interaction and constructive problem solving. Violence is a sad state but our skilled workers have the tools for change. Let ‘em work their magic.

The overwhelming incidence of domestic violence in the United States is perpetrated by males. I feel that correcting this terrible and ongoing behavior requires men to stand firmly against domestic violence and participate whenever possible to help its victims.

I support WSS because I want to break the cycle of domestic abuse that started in my own family and help other families to do the same. I want my sons to grow up in a world that supports them in handling conflicts without violence. My first grader has been so lucky to have Rebecca Cohen, WSS’s Community Educator, teach classes in his schools since preschool. He loves her lessons and they have given us wonderful opportunities to talk at home about bullying, self-esteem, friendship, and handling difficult feelings. I’m so grateful for everything WSS does for our community!

I feel so fortunate to live and work in Northwest Corner of Connecticut, and it is important to me to give back to our local area in meaningful ways. As a mother of three young girls I realize that, according to the numbers, they are at great risk of experiencing abuse in their lifetimes. “Approximately 1 in 5 female students is physically or sexually abused by a dating partner” ...what an alarming statistic. As a health and wellness teacher, I also know that so much can be done in the way of prevention and education. I am proud to be a part of an organization that brings these kinds of services to our local schools and communities, and I am grateful that WSS is also there to support people who need help at a dark point in their lives. WSS is a beacon of hope and an example of the good that can come when people band together in community.
